Dot Grid Paper

Dot grid paper puts a small dot at every corner of an invisible square grid. Choose the spacing in millimetres or inches, the dot size and color, and the paper size. The default is 5 mm dots on A4, 39 × 56 of them.

Journals use 5 mm; 0.25 in is the US standard.

Most printers cannot print the outer 4 to 6 mm.

Printing: choose Actual size or 100%, not “Fit to page”, so 1 cm prints as 1 cm. How to check.

How are the dots placed?

Dots across = whole part of (page width − 2 × margin) ÷ spacing, plus one, because a grid of N squares has N + 1 corners. The dots are centred on the page.

Worked example. A4 with a 10 mm margin and 5 mm spacing: (210 − 20) ÷ 5 = 38 squares across, so 39 dots; (297 − 20) ÷ 5 = 55.4, so 55 squares and 56 dots down. That is 39 × 56 = 2,184 dots, each 0.5 mm across.

Dot paper for journals

The dots are the scaffolding of a bullet journal: they keep habit trackers square, calendars even and headings straight, and then stay out of the way. If you make your own inserts, print at actual size so the spacing matches the bought pages.

Dot paper for lettering and sketching

Calligraphers use a dot grid to keep letter heights and slants even without ruled lines. Sketchers use it for perspective and proportion. For both, make the dots faint (0.3 mm, light grey) so they vanish on a scan.

Dot paper in the classroom

Isometric dot paper is a separate sheet (isometric graph paper draws the full lines). Square dot paper like this one is used for geoboard-style work: joining dots to make shapes, counting area by squares and half-squares, and drawing reflections and translations on a plain background.

Questions about dot grid paper

What dot spacing do bullet journals use?

Most journals use 5 mm, and that is the default here. US notebooks often use 1/4 inch (6.35 mm). Pick the one your existing notebook uses so pages match.

What dot size looks right?

About 0.5 mm, which is a visible point without being a blob. Go down to 0.3 mm for a faint grid under lettering, or up to 0.8 mm for a bold grid children can join up.

Can I make A5 dot paper for a planner?

Yes. Choose A5 as the paper size. With 5 mm spacing and an 8 mm margin that gives 27 × 39 dots. Many A5 planners are punched for a disc or ring system; print, then punch.

Why dots instead of lines or squares?

Dots guide your hand without competing with what you write or draw. Handwriting stays readable, sketches look clean, and the dots are enough to keep columns and boxes square.

Can I print on both sides?

Yes, and because the grid is centred on the page the dots line up front and back. Use paper of at least 90 gsm so the dots do not show through.
